Discover A Kabul Shawarma Donair

If you’re cruising down Edmonds Street in Burnaby and catch the scent of sizzling meat drifting through the air, chances are you’re close to A Kabul Shawarma Donair at 7339 Edmonds St, Burnaby, BC V3N 1A7, Canada. I’ve stopped by more times than I can count, usually after work when I’m craving something hearty but not overly heavy. Every visit feels consistent, and in the restaurant world, that reliability matters more than flashy décor.

The first thing you notice is the vertical rotisserie turning slowly behind the counter. Thin slices of seasoned beef and chicken shawarma caramelize as they cook, creating that slightly crispy edge while keeping the inside juicy. It’s not just about taste; it’s about technique. Traditional shawarma traces back to Middle Eastern street food culture, where meat is stacked carefully and roasted evenly over hours. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s food safety guidelines, maintaining proper internal temperatures for rotating meats is essential, and here, you can see they take that process seriously.

On the menu, the donair wrap is a standout. Wrapped in warm pita bread, layered with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and their signature garlic sauce, it strikes a perfect balance between freshness and richness. I once brought a friend who usually avoids red meat, but after trying the beef donair platter with rice and salad, he admitted it was surprisingly light. That’s largely due to the spice blend-cumin, coriander, paprika-adding flavor without overwhelming grease. Research from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has often highlighted how spice-based seasoning can reduce the need for excess salt and fat, and you can taste that difference here.

The chicken shawarma plate deserves its own praise. The meat is marinated overnight, which is clear from the tenderness. Marination, as culinary experts often explain, breaks down proteins and enhances moisture retention. It’s a simple method, yet when done properly, it transforms the dish. Add a side of hummus-smooth, nutty, and drizzled with olive oil-and you’ve got a meal that feels both indulgent and wholesome.

What keeps locals coming back isn’t just the food, though. It’s the straightforward service and welcoming vibe. The staff greet regulars by name, and during busy dinner hours, they move quickly without sacrificing quality. Online reviews frequently mention generous portion sizes and fair pricing, and I can vouch for that. One platter easily feeds two lighter appetites, making it a practical option for families or students nearby.

Another thing worth noting is the balance between traditional Afghan flavors and the familiar comfort of a classic donair shop. The sauces-especially the bold, creamy garlic and the slightly sweet donair sauce-are house-made. That detail matters. Packaged sauces often contain preservatives and excess sugar, but homemade versions tend to rely on fresher ingredients. The difference is subtle yet noticeable, particularly if you pay attention to texture and aftertaste.

Located conveniently in Burnaby, this spot attracts a diverse crowd: construction workers on lunch breaks, high school students grabbing wraps after class, and families picking up dinner. Its accessibility makes it one of the more convenient locations for quick, satisfying Middle Eastern cuisine in the area. Parking nearby is manageable, and takeout orders are packaged carefully, keeping the pita soft and the salad crisp.

From my experience, consistency is where this place truly shines. I’ve ordered the same chicken shawarma wrap months apart and received the same flavor, same warmth, same generous filling. In the food industry, that kind of consistency often reflects disciplined kitchen management and ingredient sourcing.

If there’s any limitation, it’s seating space during peak hours. It’s more of a cozy diner setup than a sprawling restaurant. Still, for many, that adds to its charm. You’re not here for white tablecloths-you’re here for bold spices, rotating shawarma, and a donair that satisfies every single time.

  • This is a good place to grab shawarma/donair if you're in the area. The place was clean and not busy when I ate here. Service was good as well with friendly owner. I ordered the chicken shawarma with fries inside and a side of garlic potatoes. The garlic potatoes were really good. They were soft and warm. The shawarma wrap was good as well, however my only feedback is that there needs to be bit more meat to balance out the vegetables. The seasoning was good and sauces on the shawarma were delicious. They also serve Afghanistan dishes which is cool. I also chatted with the owner regarding different versions of shawarma and donair wraps since I used to live in Doha Qatar. Owner was friendly and open to feedback. I had also suggested that they should try adding a fully grilled shawarma wrap on their menu using the panini machine and serve with a side of garlic sauce for dipping. I think this place has potential, the fact they can add fries to your wrap already makes them a step above other donair places in the lower mainland. Just a few small adjustments with the meat quantity and it'll be a perfect 10/10. Price wise, I would say it definitely leans towards the pricier side of shawarma/donair wraps. My total was just under $30. Overall, this is a good spot to grab some middle eastern food if you're in the area.

  • The food was absolutely amazing and delicious! We ordered a family platter that included lamb shank, chicken kebab, and koobideh — everything was incredibly tasty and the price was very reasonable for the amount of food we received. Since the portions were big, we even took the leftovers home. The service was excellent; they brought the food on time and the place was very clean. The staff were completely hygienic, wearing hats to ensure nothing fell into the food, and their aprons were spotless. I highly, highly recommend this place to everyone. You will truly enjoy their delicious dishes!
